WATKINS GLEN PROVES CHALLENGING
FOR DAVIS DUO AND ACS EXPRESS RACING
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y – Mike Davis charged hard and son Brandon charged close to the lead, but the Applied Computer Systems ACS Express Racing Team, co-sponsored by Sun Microsystems, could do no better than a ninth-place finish in the SPEED World Challenge Series at Watkins Glen International, Sunday, June 8.
Mike Davis, running at this challenging and unique track for the first time in his long racing history, was ninth. Brandon Davis, who impressively started from the fourth position, retired after just six of the 22 laps with a mechanical problem. In that brief time, Brandon did climb up to third and set the second fastest race lap while Mike made up six positions and won the Hard Charger award.
“I’ve never been to Watkins Glen before,” said Mike Davis, of the #11 Ford Mustang Cobra. “My lap times got faster as my confidence got going but I must say I was a bit intimidated. It’s a very difficult track to learn and be fast. Well, you can be fast but too fast and you risk wrecking the car. As a team owner, I like to drive within myself.
“Unlike the Porsches, we were unable to go flat-out through the esses and that was a difference. In fact, I was holding my breath going through the esses. Still, it was very gratifying to get the Hard Charger award.”
Brandon, in the #10 Ford Mustang Cobra, was overcome by mechanical gremlins and slipped from first to third in driver points.
“I got a decent start and made a pass to get to third,” Brandon said. “And the second-place car wound up having a DNF, too. So we could have had a second- or third-place finish and wound up with few driver points toward the championship. That’s disappointing. Hopefully we’ve used up our bad race for the year.”
