FATHER-SON TEAM LOOKS TO KEEP MOMENTUM
IN SPEED WORLD CHALLENGE GT AT MILLER
Mike Davis has the experience but son Brandon has the momentum.
Coming into this weekend’s Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park, Brandon Davis is the hottest driver in the SPEED World Challenge series, having started from the pole the first two races of the season and winning the most recent one in Long Beach. His father and teammate, Mike, is proud, but not surprised.
“He’s got a lot of natural ability,” Mike Davis said of his son. “He’s very bright, can figure things out as they develop, has a lot of composure and possesses an unbelievable desire to drive race cars.”
“It’s still there,” Brandon said of the feeling from winning his hometown race, which took place on April 20. “The biggest aspect of it, though, is the team. They are very excited and call me all the time. And from a big picture standpoint, we’re only 12 points out of the lead for the driver’s championship and I really want to win that driver’s championship.”
Brandon Davis will be gunning for his third pole in as many races and second win in the jet black #10 Ford Mustang Cobra with green trim for ACS Express Racing. Mike Davis’ car is the vibrant neon yellow and purple #11 Ford Mustang Cobra. Both carry sponsorship from Applied Computer Solutions and Sun Microsystems.
Mike Davis arrived in Salt Lake on Monday for some practice laps; he had never before been to Miller Motorsports Park. Brandon has two events here under his belt when he was driving in the SPEED Touring Car series, with a best finish of fifth.
“I’ll try and give dad some pointers, but his experience as a driver gives him a great baseline to learn any track,” Brandon Davis said. “Plus, we’re not running the outer portion of the track as in my past events here. That cuts out several turns and makes it a bit different for me. I also think that will make it a much more exciting race.”
“What a facility,” Mike Davis said of Miller Motorsports Park. “The track, the garages, everything is first class. I did come out here early to see it and get to know the track. It’s a good thing I did, too, because I immediately went off into the dirt. I thought Turn 2 was the fast turn and it’s really Turn 3.”
While the ultimate objective of the weekend is a win – a 1-2 finish with either father or son in the lead would be ideal – it is quite important to the team owner to bring both cars across the finish line.
“The goal of the season is no DNFs (did not finish) due to mechanical problems,” Mike Davis said. “Our crew is very diligent and works very hard to reach that goal. They have been outstanding.”
