BRANDON DAVIS TAKES SECOND PLACE FOR ACS EXPRESS RACING
MILLVILE, N.J. – Brandon Davis made it a successful weekend for ACS express Racing as he started from the pole position and finished second in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT race Saturday (Sept. 27) at New Jersey Motorsports Park"s Thunderbolt Raceway.
His teammate – and father – Mike Davis made a late run to finish 11th after qualifying 15th. Both cars are sponsored by Allied Computer Solutions and Sun Microsystems.
It was Brandon’s third second-place finish of the year and moved him up to third in driver’s standings at 711 points with one event remaining. “It was a good day but also a little disappointing because I thought we had the car to win the race,” said Brandon, who drove the #10 jet black Ford Mustang Cobra. “There was some debris on the track and James (second place starter and eventual race winner James Sofronas) was able to get by me at the beginning.
“I felt I was quicker than him but he made himself wide. I got close a couple of times but couldn’t get by him.”
Brandon made a run of it at the end. After getting hung up by a lapped car and falling behind the leader by more than three seconds, he was right on Sofronas’ tail at the end.
“I wound up having to drive the race like it was a qualifying session,” Brandon said. “As a result, I had no tires and no grip at the end. We did have a restart a couple of laps from the finish and he had a little bobble so I managed to get close, but I just couldn’t make the pass.”
The result was a classic example of a total team effort. In order for Brandon to even get to the qualifying session and put him in position to win the race, the crew had to make a quick fix after Brandon found the wall in the last practice session. They rolled the car out to the track as the other cars were already in place. “They saved my butt,” Brandon said.
A little further back in the field, in the vibrant neon yellow and purple #11 Ford Mustang Cobra, Mike Davis overcame a tough qualifying session to turn in a respectable finish.
“I spent more time on the dirt in the qualifying session than I did on the track,” Mike Davis quipped. “In the race, I was able to slowly move up as it went on, so it worked out well.
“Now we’ve got two good cars as we head into next week’s race.”
The season ends next weekend at the Road Atlanta, with the GT race occurring on Friday, Oct. 3. Mike Davis enters it 11th in drivers standings with 482 points.
