PURSUING MORE AT MOSPORT:
ACS EXPRESS RACING CONSIDERING CAR CHANGE
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada – With the drivers championship still in sight but in danger of pulling away, ACS Express Racing may be making a major change for driver Brandon Davis.
It has a back-up Dodge Viper for Davis to possibly replace the Ford Mustang Cobra he has been driving in this weekend’s Mosport SPEED GT Presented by Toyo Tires World Challenge GT. In this day of sponsorships, contracts and other obligations, this is almost unheard of during the season, but it shows the level to which the team is willing to reach for its talented rookie driver.
And they say the Oakland Raiders have a Commitment to Excellence. “The Ford Mustang Cobra took a pretty hard hit at the last race in Road America and bent the frame,” explained team owner Mike Davis, who is not only Brandon’s father but also his teammate. “We’ve worked on it and think it’s ready to go, but we want to be sure we put Brandon in a position to score points.
“The Viper was an easy choice. It’s ready to race in this series direct from the factory. If Brandon wins a couple of races and scores points, then that gives him a chance to challenge for the championship. We’re committed to being competitive.”
In his first year in the SPEED World Challenge GT series, Brandon Davis is third in the title chase with 484 points.
He has won from the pole at Long Beach – a season highlight as the team is located in Huntington Beach, CA – and has finished second at Salt Lake City and Mid-Ohio. Mike Davis, who will continue to pilot the #11 vibrant neon yellow Ford Mustang Cobra, is 11th with 307 points.
When Brandon was crashed hard out of the most recent race at Road America, it presented a challenge to repair the Ford Mustang Cobra in time for this critical three-race stretch in August, beginning with Mosport. It also put a serious dent in his hopes for hoisting the series’ prized post-season trophy.
A hard charger with calculating composure, Brandon is as fired up as an ignition switch. He realizes the challenge in front of him, but he also knows he won his first career pole here, driving Touring Cars in 2005, and appreciates the effort being made to keep him in title contention.
“This move shows what this team is willing to do to win a championship,” he said. “It definitely gives us (Brandon and the car’s crew) a positive feeling.
“The Viper is a much different car. It has more torque and no ABS, which is quite a bit of an adjustment as a driver.”
Mike Davis feels Mosport is the perfect place to make such a move. “I love Mosport,” Mike Davis said. “The Canadian race fans are so knowledgeable it’s just a great place to race. And that Turn 1, with the hard right-hand turn and the downhill at Turn 2 well, if that doesn’t get your heart going, I don’t know what will do it.”
